you don't address strangers with "DU" in germany, that's rude. if you go to a berlin pub and you address everyone with "YOU", you'll be thrown out on the street with a black eye. it has to do with respect, only friends are allowed to be addressed with "you". if you enter a room in germany, you are nothing ! - you have to accept the rank order, we germanic people are wolves ;)

a big problem when you don't speak german. the germans keep their distance, only when you are my friend you are allowed to address me as "YOU". i also have this problem with dutch, although our language is very similar ;)
