That's a good question and one that both the prosecution&defense attorneys will have to address. I think the time he is facing might be due to it being an aggravated charge and such a high profile case. Whilst the defense will say that Chauvin's charges appear to appease the crowd mentality and that he is being used as either a bellwether case, scapegoat, or to make an example of him for future such cases. But it will be very hard to defend that tape (so much for body cameras and smartphones). The city has already settled a civil lawsuit and to the tune of $27 million or thereabouts. If he ever does get found to be innocent and that is the presumption in any case (innocent until proven guilty) ... it will cause a nice giant shitstorm come later this Spring. And if he goes to prison ... he's a dead man walking and on account of what he did for a profession. ttyl and I promise a flyby later on.
