Approach A: Protection through restriction

We limit certain types of expression to minimize people’s exposure to hate, denigration, or extremist messages.

Approach B: Protection
We empower individuals to recognize problematic statements, examine them critically, process them emotionally, and counter them with arguments.

The advantage: People become less dependent on an authority figure to control their environment. They remain capable of navigating the world even when confronted with radical, hurtful, or manipulative positions.

If a society seeks to shield its citizens from every problematic statement by continually narrowing the scope of permissible discourse, it may end up with individuals who—while living in a controlled environment—are less practiced at independently identifying manipulation, propaganda, and ideological simplifications.

A resilient society, by contrast, would not require everyone to endorse every statement. Instead, it would strengthen people’s ability to distinguish between a claim and evidence, between criticism and dehumanization, and between an uncomfortable opinion and an actual threat.

One can contrast this with a different model of society: one whose stability does not rely on everyone using the "correct" language or sharing the same convictions, but rather on the capacity to navigate conflict.

This involves people learning that a hurtful opinion is not automatically sense of outrage is not, in itself, proof that one is in the right.

I have read through the introduction to your essay, and I find myself in complete agreement with you.

For a long time, I have perceived the dangers to freedom of speech as being more profound—specifically, the systematic alteration of language, or what is known as "Newspeak." The goal is not merely to penalize certain thoughts, but to shrink the linguistic space within which people are even capable of formulating such thoughts in the first place.

This is a crucial distinction:

Censorship of individual expressions: Certain statements are prohibited from being published.

Control of terminology: Certain words and interpretations are rendered taboo or branded with a moral stigma.

Alteration of the framework of thought: People learn to stop asking certain questions altogether, because the very act of formulating them is deemed illegitimate.

At first, personality tests hold a certain appeal—perhaps even offering a surprising insight.

But at some point, the whole thing shifts.

What begins as an invitation to self-reflection turns into a pigeonhole. A potential description transforms into a supposed explanation of who you are, how you love, how you think, and why you behave the way you do—much like a horoscope. You recognize yourself in a description and may then begin to view yourself through the lens of that description—not necessarily because it is truly accurate, but because it provides a ready-made framework for interpretation.

I was thinking about that personality test thing again; I recalled that you were an INTP and I was an ENTP. That prompted me to look into the concepts of introversion and extroversion a bit more.

I really appreciate that, Mark! 🙂 I'd love to visit Ireland someday and explore where my ancestors came from. I can only imagine how special it would be to experience that history firsthand and see some of the places you've shared in your videos. And yes, I remember saying you live in paradise! 😂 Your videos have definitely given me a glimpse of how beautiful Ireland is. It's awesome that you've been able to explore so much of the U.S. too! You've seen quite a few places. I agree with you that travel is good for the soul. There's so much to see and experience in this world, and I'd love to do more exploring myself.

Thanks for what you said about my grandparents, too. I spent seven years caring for them, and although it took me down a different path than the one I'd originally planned, I'm grateful I could be there for them when they needed me. Losing them was hard, but those years meant a lot to me. I've learned that life doesn't always go the way we expect, and sometimes we end up on a completely different path than the one we imagined.

You're right that it's never too late to start again! I admire you for going after your education at 44. It takes dedication to go back to university and study something new, especially when most of your classmates are younger. You should be proud of yourself! Age shouldn't stop any of us from pursuing something we're passionate about.

Wow, congratulations again! You should be really proud of yourself. I can imagine how much hard work and dedication it took to get into Trinity, especially with it being such a prestigious university. You definitely earned it! I didn't know Bram Stoker was president of the philosophical society there. That's pretty interesting, considering how iconic *Dracula* has become! 😂

I also didn't know Courtney Love was an alumna! I've always liked her music, and she's been in some pretty interesting movies, too. So that's pretty cool to learn! It's amazing how many interesting people have connections to a place like Trinity.

Your essay topic about free speech and hate speech sounds really interesting, too. It's an important subject, and I can understand why you'd feel strongly about protecting freedom of expression. It'll be interesting to see how you approach it from a legal perspective, especially since you've never written that kind of essay before. Good luck getting all three finished before November 2nd!

I'd definitely love to see the pictures of Trinity! A university with 400 years of history must have some incredible architecture and stories behind it. Thanks for sharing them with me, and best of luck with your essays! 🙂

can be very talkative, sociable, and enjoy being around people, yet still be an introvert at heart. That is not a contradiction.

Introversion does not automatically mean that someone is shy, quiet, or reserved.
...and can fill a room with personality—while at the same time observing a great deal and reflecting deeply.

You have a very introverted side, don't you?

I lost my way because it was so foggy.
The forest was clammy as a grave and fingers tangled in my hair.
A bird cried as high and hollow as when a child cries in its slumber
and I was cold, I knew well what they say about this forest!
Then I put my foot in front of my leg again and easily get from the spot
and in the last evening light squeaked hard forward through mud and dirt...
It was foggy, it was drizzling, it smelled like mud, rotten and wet,
it rustled and trickled and crawled and jumped in the tall grass.
Suddenly, before I know it, I'm on the stream, in the water.
I stop at the edge, startled, the tide almost wets my soles.
The reeds stretch as far as the fir trees and sway and sway as far as you can see
and whispers angrily now and then when it nods in the damp breeze..."

A cold shoulder?
I don’t know—perhaps I’m just a bit more introverted at this time of year. Autumn is actually one of my favorite seasons
—especially late autumn, when it turns stormy, dark, and rainy.

I find myself drawn to the melancholy of it all, and its absolute, sweeping vastness.
