Hi Ato, well funnily enough it was the same in Ireland. Prior to our colonization by the English, we had a system of laws known as the "Brehon Laws", where same sex marriage wasn't an issue. It was English common law which forced us to adopt marriage as an institution strictly between men and women. Later on Catholicism continued that tradition. Now it has all come full circle, with the ratification of same sex marriage once again...in 2015.
