No, the pneumonic plague is not truly airborne in the way highly contagious viruses like COVID-19 or measles are. Instead, health experts classify it as droplet-transmissible, meaning it travels through heavier respiratory particles.
Here is how the transmission actually works:
• Close Contact Required: The bacteria (Yersinia pestis) spread when an infected person or animal coughs or sneezes, throwing out respiratory droplets.
