A friend of mine worked for the U.S. Forest Service and he used to tell me that some of these fires burned weird ... almost as if they were fueled by something. But, aside from those whipping winds, a lot of these burns are due to a few mitigating circumstances; maintaining some of these high priority areas (burn-backs, so to speak ... i.e., burning dead areas that become tinder for future fires) and the fact that they continue to let people build where people shouldn't build. But the PALISADES FIRE is absolute devastation. What gets me is the report that many of these unfortunate homeowners were dropped from their home insurance policies.
