Funny you should mention the influence of Anglo Caribbean migrants and their descendants in DR. I was just telling Ato that in Ireland we had a system of laws known as the Brehon Laws, which survived from the 7th to the 17th century, under which...same sex marriage was not an issue. It wasn't until English common law was introduced in the 17th century that marriage became an institution between a man and a woman. If you want to read up on it, I'd recommend a book called "Brehon Laws: The Ancient Wisdom Of Ireland" by Jo Kerrigan. Under Brehon Law, apparently a deeply humane and cultured society flourished, where the Irish stored knowledge while the rest of Europe was burning books.
