Yeah, I was his healthcare proxy, but only put into play at the end (which allowed them to administer morphine and put the DO NOT RESUSCITATE order into play) and also when he first presented with the cancer (he had to be intubated for a few days). I had been one for my parents too and I am now one for a friend (only if his wife is unavailable or incapacitated). The decisions come with a surreal weightiness, but they must be split-second in their unfolding.
